Exploring the Past Through Artefacts: Holding History Workshops
On Tuesday, 21st April, pupils in Primary Five, Six and Seven took part in a fantastic series of history workshops delivered by Seán McNicholl, owner of Holding History. These highly engaging sessions offered children a unique, hands-on opportunity to handle original artefacts and high-quality replicas, from a range of historical periods, including the Viking era, the Stone Age and both World Wars.
Primary 5 pupils, who are currently studying the Vikings as part of the World Around Us curriculum, were fascinated to examine authentic coins, jewellry and weapons from this period. They also explored examples of Viking clothing and archaeological finds, which brought their classroom learning vividly to life and sparked many thoughtful discussions.
Primary 6 pupils thoroughly enjoyed handling Mesolithic flints discovered in County Tyrone, linking directly with their studies of the Stone Age. Meanwhile, Primary 7 pupils explored artefacts from the Irish War of Independence and World War Two, gaining a deeper understanding of these significant historical events through practical investigation.
The children responded very positively to all of the workshops and impressed Seán with their enthusiasm, curiosity and excellent questioning. It was a memorable and enriching experience for all involved, helping to develop a real sense of excitement and appreciation for history beyond the classroom.
