Primary 5 and Primary 6 are Woodland Explorers!

17th May 2024

On Friday, 19th April, the Primary 5 and 6 classes visited the beautiful Florencecourt for a day of discovery and adventure!

The event was held as part of their Educational programme for this academic year. St Mary’s chose to partake in the WOODLAND EXPLORERS session with the lovely Joan and Roz, who facilitated the programme on the day.

First, we were led on a trail Which led us to the old Saw Mill, an industrial heritage feature, which dates back to the 19th century. The saw mill is no longer in use, however, in its heyday, it provided much needed employment for the local area and produced various items for purchase.

Following on from our history lesson, we were invited to go on a tree hunt, investigating native and non-native trees on the estate and their vital role in supporting biodiversity in the woodlands.

Our weather was a bit unpredictable on the day, however, it did not dampen our enthusiasm and we all left the estate full of worldly knowledge about the various plant life and the species it supports.

Many thanks to all, who made the trip possible. We look forward to another visit, in the near future.
