Congratulations are extended to all involved in the double success of defending the St Aidan's Shield and winning the Knockninny Shield, at St Aidan’s, Derrylin, on 25th September. An extremely enjoyable day was had by all, in the beautiful surroundings of St Aidan's, Derrylin, with the weather absolutely perfect for football. This was an excellent opportunity for our Primary Seven children to represent St Mary’s, with all 20 children playing their part in winning both respective competitions.
Following some excellent football throughout the day, St Mary’s qualified for the St Aidan’s Shield final against a strong side from Scoil Mhuire, Swanlinbar. It is surely true to say that the St Aidan’s Shield team had to dig deep, playing with skill, courage and determination, to see off Scoil Mhuire by a single point, to retain the St Aidan’s Shield for a third consecutive year.
Double success was secured when St Mary’s defeated St Mary’s, Killesher, in a very competitive Knockninny Shield final. The Knockninny Shield team played so well throughout the competition, remaining unbeaten and showing huge heart, bravery and tenacity to secure a two point win, in what was a brilliant final.
As always, our pupils were a credit to their school, families and community, as they showed respect, manners and sportsmanship towards their opponents and referees, alike.
A huge thank you to all who came to support the team and to our staff, who accompanied the children to the competition. This was a fantastic start to our sporting year, boding well for future competitions.
